[Project] Running an uninhabited island in the middle of a lake

Bungeo Island Ecological Park on Okjeongho Lake is called the jewel of Imsil County. By day it is a lovely island, full of visitors who come to sit among the flowers and trees; once the sun goes down it is left alone in complete silence.

So what happens on Bungeo Island after everyone has gone home?

The island's care does not clock off: Bungeo Island's invisible gardener

The staff sweat from early morning to keep Bungeo Island beautiful. But there is an obvious limit to how much of a large ecological park people can tend by hand, corner by corner.

1. Continuity of care beyond what staffing allows

There are nowhere near enough hours in the day to walk the whole island watering it by hand. And plants do not distinguish weekdays from holidays. On the weekends and public holidays when nobody is on duty, the island's environment still has to be checked in real time. AoT fills those blind spots in time and place with data.

2. Catching the real golden hour, before dawn

Plants take up water and prepare to grow best in the early hours just before sunrise. That is also exactly the gap in coverage — before any staff member has arrived.

Soil left wet all night can actually interfere with the plants' respiration, so AoT starts watering at the right moment, before staff arrive. By the time they reach the island, the plants are already at their liveliest and ready to meet visitors.

3. The intelligent management system AoT planted on Bungeo Island

The island now sustains itself with no staff present — even in the quiet of a holiday.

Data-driven automatic irrigation: soil condition and weather data are analysed, and exactly the right amount of water goes automatically to the zones that need it.

  • Magic that opens the dawn: in the early hours when nobody is there, the AoT system runs and waters the whole island evenly.
  • Remote monitoring: managers do not have to be on the island. A phone is enough to check, from anywhere and at any time, that the water is going in and the system is healthy.

4. How Bungeo Island's mornings changed

When staff arrive early in the morning, there is no longer any need to run around with a hose.

  • An ecosystem that wakes up damp: flowers and trees that took on the right amount of water overnight catch the morning light and shine all the fresher for it.
  • Better use of people: freed from the hard labour of watering, staff can now concentrate on the creative work of pruning the plants and making the island lovelier.
  • A healthier park: regular, scientific irrigation has left the island's vegetation in far better condition than before.

Smart ecological management with AoT

Bungeo Island on Okjeongho is becoming more than a park: a smart ecological park where advanced technology and nature exist side by side.

Helping nature look after itself in the hours when no one can — that is the future of management AoT is working toward.
